PNG is a lossless format, and no browser provides a lossy PNG encoder. This tool re-encodes your PNG losslessly rather than faking a quality slider that wouldn't actually do anything — the quality control is disabled for PNG files for exactly that reason.

Why results vary

Whether a lossless re-encode shrinks a given PNG depends entirely on how it was originally saved. Some tools leave room for further optimization; others already produce a tightly-packed file. Either outcome is normal — the before/after size shown is always the real result, never an assumed percentage.

Does the quality slider affect my PNG?

No, and we don't pretend it does — no browser has a lossy PNG mode, so the slider is disabled for PNG files. Your image is re-encoded losslessly instead.

So what does 'compress' mean for a PNG here?

It re-encodes the PNG through the browser's own encoder. Depending on how the original file was saved, this sometimes reduces size — for example, a PNG exported from certain tools without optimization may shrink. It is not guaranteed, and we show the real before/after size rather than a fabricated percentage.

Why did my PNG not get smaller?

Some PNGs are already well-optimized by the software that created them, and a lossless re-encode has nothing further to remove. That's expected and shown honestly rather than hidden.

I need a smaller file — what are my options?

If you don't need transparency or lossless quality, converting to JPG or WebP will usually shrink a photographic PNG considerably further, since both support real lossy compression.
